Beyond the Golden Stool
About Course
The Asante Kingdom, one of the most powerful and influential empires
in West African history, has left an indelible mark on the region’s culture,
politics, and economy. However, the history of the Asante people
extends far beyond the geographical boundaries of today’s Ashanti
Region in Ghana. Internal disputes, political rivalries, and strategic
migrations led to the dispersal of several Asante families, who in turn
established powerful kingdoms, towns, and communities across West
Africa.
This book explores the dispersion and settlement of Asante people in
various regions, including Côte d’Ivoire, the Eastern Region of Ghana,
and the Oti Region. Through a detailed examination of historical
accounts, oral traditions, and cultural practices, this book sheds light on
the enduring legacy of Asante identity and its impact on the region.
From the Baoulé Kingdom in Côte d’Ivoire to the New Dwaben
settlement in the Eastern Region and the Worawora community in the
Oti Region, the Asante people’s migrations and settlements have shaped
the cultural, economic, and political landscape of West Africa. This book
argues that Asante identity transcends the Ashanti Region, with Asante
culture and traditions continuing to influence the lives of people across
the region.
